About the Job:

The Traffic Signal Technician Supervisor is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic signals, flashers, and roadway lighting, as well as performing maintenance, repair, and installation of traffic signal/flasher control devices and components either at the intersection or in the shop. This individual is responsible to make changes, updates, and/or improvements to make the signal more efficient, as well as bring up to current standards. This role may make emergency repairs to damaged equipment, faulty LED's, and/or improper traffic signal operation on an emergency call out basis, which is 24 hours a day during assigned standby rotations.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Perform maintenance, repair, and installation of traffic signal/flasher control devices either at an intersection or in the shop, including:
    • Testing, troubleshooting, splicing of our various detection methods and amplifier setup, including:
      Loops, Microloops, Sensys wireless pucks; Video.
    • Setup and troubleshooting of all communication devices with various controllers, as well as setup and troubleshooting of audible pedestrian indications including radio, fiber optics and cellular modems.
    • Upload/download program from panel and detector mapping for all controller manufacturers/models that INDOT currently maintains.
    • Setup card and program all Malfunction Monitoring Unit (MMU) manufacturers/models that INDOT currently maintains.
    • Controller cabinet troubleshooting including back panel, power supply, field wiring and detection racks
  • Diagnose operational problems relevant to traffic signal or flasher equipment in the field and makes necessary repairs or adjustments including replacing malfunctioning controllers with temporary units when shop repairs are required;
  • Operate testing devices for isolating and identifying electrical and electronic malfunctions (i.e. ohmmeter, voltmeter, ammeter, potentiometer, phase rotation indicators);
  • Install complete signal or flasher installations (i.e. poles, mast arms, or pedestals; span, catenary and down guys:
    signal/flasher heads:
    loop, sonic, magnetic or pad detectors; pre-timed or actuated controller, pedestrian signals, etc.);
  • Inspect and perform routine preventive maintenance on traffic signal/flasher control equipment (i.e. check structural alignment, clearance, and security; clean, adjust, or replace contacts, fuses, relays motors:
    check voltage and amperage load):
  • Check and recalibrate timing; check circuits and wiring; check operation of detectors for adequate traffic flow, etc.;
  • Respond to emergency off-hour call-outs immediately:
  • Execute modernization program to bring signal/flasher installations in conformance with current standards and specifications;
  • Determine what safety measures are necessary for specific projects (i.e.flagman, police officer, construction signs, cones etc.);
  • Recommend modifications in the layout of intersections or technical aspects of equipment;
  • Make field measurements, collect topographical data, and assist in the layout of a signalized intersection;
  • Assist contractors with technical aspects of traffic signal equipment operations:
  • Rebuild signal cabinets; disassembles and reassembles controllers, remove and replace loop detectors;
  • Perform underground conduit locales;
  • Record information into the Work Management System
  • Control traffic on highways and at intersections for traffic signal work;
  • Assist and/or cooperate with contractors, police officers, and utility companies with field repairs, emergency operation, and underground locates;
  • Maintain and update files of all traffic signals for signal timing, emergency call-outs, and equipment inventory;

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Must possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) or must obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Associates degree in electronics, computer programming, or related field; in lieu of education five (5) years of industry experience is required;
  • High school graduate or equivalent;
  • International Municipal Signal Association Level 2 Certification and INDOT Signal Technician Certification; after that must complete continuing education requirements to maintain certification;
  • Ability to read and analyze diagrams, electrical drawings, and manuals;
  • Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather;
  • Must be available for snow and ice removal and report in a timely manner.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
